How It Works

A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a 48-bit identifier assigned to network interfaces. It consists of 6 bytes (12 hex digits) split into two halves:

  • First 3 bytes (OUI): Organizationally Unique Identifier — assigned by IEEE to hardware manufacturers
  • Last 3 bytes (NIC): Device-specific portion — unique per device from that manufacturer

Two special bits in the first byte control address behavior:

  • Bit 0 (least significant): 0 = Unicast, 1 = Multicast
  • Bit 1: 0 = Universally Administered (UAA), 1 = Locally Administered (LAA)

This generator uses crypto.getRandomValues() for cryptographically strong randomness and sets the appropriate flag bits based on your selections.
